UV-resistant Polycarbonate (PC) is a modified grade that combines the inherent strengths of PC with enhanced weatherability. Standard PC is an amorphous thermoplastic known for an outstanding balance of transparency, very high impact strength, good heat and cold resistance, dimensional stability, and electrical insulation. The UV-resistant modification protects the polymer chain from solar ultraviolet radiation, which normally causes yellowing and embrittlement. This makes it suitable for outdoor applications. Key features include: excellent and stable electrical insulation over broad temperature and humidity ranges; inherent flame retardancy (often UL94 V-2 without additives) with low smoke emission; FDA compliance for certain grades, allowing use in food contact and medical applications; and the ability to withstand repeated sterilization. In automotive contexts, UV-stabilized PC is used in exterior parts like bumpers and headlamp lenses, and interior parts like dashboards. Its high impact strength, safety, high refractive index for lens design, and relatively low density are significant advantages. Its ability to endure steam and chemical disinfection also makes it valuable for transparent medical devices and equipment housings.
